How to back up to iOS phones

If we have an Apple phone and we are going to configure the backups of it, copies that as we have seen in other articles we  consider one of the basic elements of the security of our mobile, the first question that we must answer is do I use iCloud or is it preferable iTunes program for PC?

Although there is not a single answer to this question and even on some occasions it is advisable to use both options at the same time, the ease of configuration of the copies in iCloud, the total automation of the copy process and the ubiquity of the system that allows you to do without A desktop computer makes this type of copy the recommended solution for most users.

Sometimes we may need to supplement the iCloud solution with a copy through the iTunes desktop program. This option is essential to keep synchronized content that is on the mobile device through iTunes, but does not come from purchases in the iTunes Store. It would also be necessary if the volume of photos on the mobile exceeds the storage capacity of iCloud and we do not want to expand it by purchasing more space.

In this article we will focus on how to make backups on iOS mobiles, on Apple smartphones or tablets, through iCloud and in a future article we will approach the copying process using iTunes.

Before explaining what iCloud is and how it is used, point out that in the “cloud” storage services, the files that we keep on our computers become stored on a set of servers that you will access through the Internet. In our teams the custody of these files is our responsibility, but in the cloud this responsibility is transferred to the company that provides us with the service according to the conditions of use established in each case.

What is iCloud?

In the same way that Microsoft has OpenDrive, Google for its Drive system, or we find independent cloud storage systems like Dropbox,  iCloud is Apple’s cloud storage system.

It is a service recently introduced by Apple that allows users to have a storage space for all kinds of content, be they photos, music, calendars or contacts. Upon registering for the service, we have 5 GB of free space that we can use to carry out automatic backups, although it should be noted that the contents acquired from Apple through its stores are stored without deducting a share from this free space.

If we need to expand this space, Apple offers a series of annual space purchase plans that currently range from € 16 a year for 10 GB, to € 80 a year for 50 GB. You can find this information in the iCloud account information.

How to sign up for iCloud?

When purchasing an Apple mobile or tablet, you can sign up for iCloud by following the instructions in the setup wizard. So at the same time of activating your device you can already configure iCloud. If it is not configured, we must access Settings> iCloud to complete the process.

You can find information about iCloud and the registration process on the Apple website.

How to activate iCloud backup?

Backup to iCloud is simple and automatic, making it the recommended way for all those who want to make reliable copies in the cloud.

To activate it we will go to ” Settings> iCloud> Storage and copy ” and activate ” Copy to iCloud “. At this time we can perform the backup by pressing “Back up now”. If we are not connected to a Wifi this option will not be active, since backups are only made if we have a connection to a wireless network.

The choice of the elements to copy must be made in the option ” Settings> iCloud> Storage and copy ” at this point in addition to activating the copy we find the use of storage space, indicating both the total storage (remember that 5 GB are free) as available. On this screen we click on ” Manage Storage ” and once on this screen on the icon of our iPhone.

Backup options

Also on this screen we find the copy options where application by application shows us whether or not your backup is activated. Clicking on the option ” Show all applications ” will show us all the applications that we have installed and their “weight” in our backup.

In case of having space problems, it is recommended to deactivate the option to copy the images contained in Reel and opt for another type of backup for our photographs.

In future articles we will discuss the different options for backing up photos, either through external hard drives or cloud services.
